Desmond Dekker Came First
1968 recording (never released)
There's a right and a wrong way just to do everything
Desmond Dekker, he came first, and the Techniques, they came third
Clancy Eccles, he runs fourth, and Derrick Harriot, he came fifth
So I came second in the competition
*This song is in reference to the 1968 Independence Festival Song
Competition, in which Desmond Dekker's "Intensified Dirt" beat out the Maytals'
"Bim Today" for first prize. The Maytals won the first annual competition
in 1966, with "Bam Bam" and again in 1969, with "Sweet and Dandy" and in
1972, with "Pomp and Pride."
**The music and lyrics are based on 1964's "Good Idea".
